    About Una

    Una is a district of Himachal Pradesh which lies in its South Western part. The present Una district until Ist Nov. 1966 was one of the tehsil of the Hoshiarpur district of Punjab. Consequent upon reorganization of Punjab all the hill areas including Una tehsil was transferred to Himachal Pradesh. Eversince until Aug. 1972 it continued to remain as tehsil of Kangra district. On the Ist September,1972 the Himachal Pradesh government reorganized the then Kangra district into three districts namely Una, Hamirpur and Kangra.

    Location

    Una is located between 31017'52" - 31052'0" North latitude and 75058'2" - 76028'25" East longitude. It has an average elevation of 350 metres to 1200 metres. The terrain is plain with small hills. Una shares its border with Hoshiarpur distict of Punjab. Una district is bounded by the river Beas on the north and the river Satluj in the east. The Swan river which is basically seasonal, flows right across the Jaswan valley towards South until it submerges in the Satluj river near Anandpur Sahib.

     Una district falls in Submountain, low hills and subtropical zone. The winter prevails from October-mid March, summer from mid March-June and rainy season from July-September. The minimum temperature in winter goes to 3 degree centigrade and rises to 47 degrees centigrade in summer. The average annual rainfall is 1200 mm. A major portion of the precipitation is received during monsoon period from June to September.

    Agriculture

    People of Una mainly earn their livelihood through agriculture but now industrial development is also taking place. Total geographical area as per revenue papers is 1549 Square kilometer out of which 430 square kilometers is cultivated area. The net irrigated area is 10500 hectares out of 40492 hectares (cultivated area ).

    Major crops of the district are Wheat, Maize and Paddy. In vegetables tomatoes, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Peas, Cucurbits and Potatoes are the main crops. Major sources of irrigation are tube wells, wells  and lift irrigation. Channelization of Swan river has rendered vast tract of land fit for cultivation. Una District of Himachal  Pradesh has the unique distinction of being first in the Indian union to pioneer the cooperative movement as first cooperative institution at Panjawar (Distt Una) was registered in 1892.
